The Holy Cross of our Lord is celebrated on different occasions throughout the ecclesiastical year. The Feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross is one of the twelve Great Feasts of the Church, and is celebrated on September 14. It commemorates the finding of the True Cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by Saint Helen, and also celebrates how an instrument of a shameful death ultimately became an instrument of salvation and eternal life.

The Veneration of the Holy Cross is celebrated on the third Sunday of Great Lent. The commemoration and ceremonies of this day are closely parallel to the above mentioned Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross and also to the Procession of the Cross (August 1). The most common icon associated with this day is the one used on the Feast of the Exaltation the Cross.

On this page, we have collected our printable activity packets with interactive ideas for teaching both the Exaltation and the Veneration of the Holy Cross. They can be used to teach any lesson focusing on the Cross of our Lord. Even if you are teaching one of the the above Feasts, we recommend exploring all three packets, as some activities from one topic can also be used for teaching the other.
