ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Natalie, the creator and owner of Orthodox Pebbles, recently hosted a creative workshop for youth aged 8 years and up, inspired by the rich visual tradition of Orthodox art. It took place at the 2026 Massachusetts Homeschool Family Conference organized by Saint Emmelia Ministries, the Department of Homeschooling of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese.

We began by exploring the history, purpose, and symbolism of Orthodox decorative motifs, discovering how these beautiful patterns have been used throughout different periods and forms of sacred art.

Next came the fun part: making art! Drawing inspiration from a collection of Orthodox designs spanning different time periods and art forms, younger participants decorated their own mugs, while older ones created repeatable fabric patterns. It was a wonderful opportunity to internalize the beauty and meaning of these traditional motifs, reinterpret them through creativity and imagination, and explore a playful and unexpected artistic technique. After the workshop, participants will look at their surroundings in church, as well as the objects they use in private worship, with a new appreciation.

A sample of the seamless repeatable patterns the children created at the workshop, mocked up as fabric and as various home dรฉcor items. (Click on each image to see a larger version.)

It was a fantastic experience from start to finish, and certainly one worth repeating. THANK YOU Saint Emmelia Ministries for the opportunity!

HOW TO SEAL THE MUG DESIGN

  • Let the design dry completely. Allow the design to dry for at least four hours.
  • Place the mug in a cold oven. Do not preheat the oven first. Place the mug on a baking sheet or directly on the oven rack.
  • Heat gradually. Set the oven to 350ยฐF and allow the mug to heat up with the oven.
  • Bake for 1 hour. Start timing once the oven reaches the desired temperature.
  • Cool completely. Turn off the oven and leave the mug inside until it has cooled entirely. This gradual cooling helps reduce the risk of thermal shock and cracking.
  • Hand-wash the mug. For the longest-lasting design, wash gently by hand and avoid soaking or using a dishwasher.

PUTTING THE PATTERNS TO USE

The fabric patterns designed by the children are available on Spoonflower, a custom fabric and home dรฉcor printing website. You can order fabric or a variety of home dรฉcor items featuring the children’s artwork.

The designs will stay visible on that website until mid-November 2026, then they will be removed for privacy reasons. If you wish to reuse a design after that time, kindly CONTACT US.

Please see the instructions below for how to place an order. A small royalty from each order will go to Saint Emmelia Ministries.

Kindly note that the fabric shown in the instructions is only a sample pattern and is not one of the childrenโ€™s designs.

WHAT TO MAKE WITH MY FABRIC?

It can be especially meaningful to make something for the childrenโ€™s parish, such as a tablecloth for a communal gathering or a gift for the priest, parish secretary, or ministry leaders. In this way, the workshopโ€™s main takeaway is put into practice: decorative arts are an essential part of Orthodox Church life, helping to make visible the beauty of the Kingdom of God in our everyday experiences.

An adult or crafty teenager can use the fabric to create all kinds of sewn items. There are also many child-friendly no-sew projects that can be made using a fat quarter or a larger piece of fabric. Fleece fabric is especially appropriate for kids’ creations, as it doesn’t fray and needs no hemming.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is advised to consider the design you choose in relation to the practical use of the finished project. If the design includes sacred elements that should be treated with particular reverence, such as crosses or certain monograms, keep this in mind when planning how and where the design will be used.

For inspiration and ideas, explore these curated resources:

  • Fleece Wreath – A no-sew decorative project suitable for all ages.
  • No-Sew Fleece Blankets – A webpage offering four different options for making fleece blankets that require no sewing skills. A great project for children of all ages. IDEA TO CONSIDER: There are organizations that collect homemade fleece blankets and gift them to seriously ill or traumatized children. Two such organizations are Project Linus and Fleece and Thank You. Organizing a fleece blanket-making session for such a charity can be a very meaningful almsgiving group project for children.
  • DIY Fleece Blankets – These require basic sewing machine skills but are otherwise quick and easy to complete, while producing more sophisticated results than the no-sew blankets featured above.
  • Super Simple Fleece Hat – A beginner project suitable for an older child or teen learning basic sewing machine skills.
  • How to Make a Tablecloth – A practical tutorial for an older child or teenager who has learned how to use the sewing machine.
  • Fingerless Fleece Gloves – A more complicated but cool project, suitable for an older child or teen with basic sewing machine skills.
  • Kids’ Fleece Travel Pillow – As the project above, this cute and practical pillow can be made by an older child or teenager with basic sewing machine skills.
  • Easy Sewing Crafts for Kids – A STEAM-focused webpage exploring sewing as a hands-on learning activity and providing ideas and resources for beginner sewers.
